"The End of the Day" is the latest work of László Nemes, winner of the Oscar for "Son of Saul", awarded at the Venice festival. Constructed in the image of a mysterious labyrinth, the film leads us through Budapest at the beginning of the 20th century, then still one of the most important metropolises in Europe; the pearl of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The guide to the unnoticed city is the young Irisz, the daughter of the owners of the hat shop who died years ago in a fire. The girl is looking for a missing brother, but also answering questions about her own identity. He goes astray, ventures into alleys and blind alleys, discovers the interiors of elegant shops, palaces, but also anarchist hiding places and miserable worker's cubicles. This is the world of technological triumph and civilization backwardness, luxury and anxiety; a world in which your hat is showing your status. However, refinement no longer protects against the pulsing revolts in the outskirts of the city.
From the extremely dense, intense matter of secrets and premonitions; from the atmosphere digesting the world of fever, weaving László Nemes moving the story of the end. The extremely suggestive aura of the apocalypse, the title "end of the day", reminds us that nothing lasts forever, that today's capitals are tomorrow's periphery, that history is not at all over. Nostalgic, bathed in a dying light - and very loud sounding alarm, the film of the Hungarian director is not so much a journey into the past, but above all a requiem for our world.
