In Kantemir Bałagow's film, awarded in Cannes, holding its throat and dense with emotions, we watch the city and people rising from the ruins. The story of two friends who want to shake off war trauma takes place in 1945 in Leningrad, which recovers after years of siege. The heroines of the High Girl, Masha and Ija, try not only to forget about what they experienced, but also to remember who they were before their plans, emotions and feelings rusty. The young director's inspiration was the shocking reportage of the Nobel laureate Svetlana Aleksijewicz, War has nothing of a woman in itself and what a wonderful film by Balagów makes unique is the female perspective. The director does not focus on heroic deeds of war, but redefines heroism: as the everyday small victories of life over death, hope over mourning, youth over dramatic experiences.
The tall girl fantastically reconstructs the brutal realities and tense atmosphere of the post-war times, where euphoria mixes with mourning, people resume shattered resumes; and on the ruins - against all odds - hope is slowly sprouting.
